Tips and Advice for Scrap Metal Recycling

Budget Bin - Monday, November 16, 2015
There is money laying around your house and you don't even know it. Yes, your old soda cans can be recycled, but there is so much more money to be made with things you never even thought of.
  • Old appliances
  • Computers
  • Metal patio furniture
  • Pots and pans
  • Wires
  • And so much more...
Scrap metal recycling is a great way to turn old broken objects around your house into extra cash. Better yet, recycling is essential for a greener environment. Here are a few tips to help you get the most out of scrap metal recycling.

What is Recyclable?

Just about anything made out of metal can be recycled, and that includes electronics. The most common metals recycled are:
  • Copper
  • Steel
  • Aluminum
  • Brass
  • Iron
Aside from the usual soda and soup cans, old plumbing fixtures, appliances, metal grills, and wires are often thrown out without a second thought. These and other household items are easily recycled, so find a good place to store them, and when you have a good load, haul them off.

Magnets

Separating your scrap metals is important, and can make more money for you. Use a strong magnet to sort your metals into ferrous and non-ferrous piles. If the magnet sticks to an item easily, then it is ferrous. These metals, usually steel or iron, are very common metals and are not worth as much, though they are recyclable and do add up.

Non-ferrous metals, such as copper, aluminum, bronze, and stainless steel are worth more money, and they typically do not stick to a magnet. The scrap yard would prefer if the metals you recycle are sorted, and knowing the value of what you have will make scrap metal recycling more lucrative.

Making extra cash from metal items you would normally throw away is great for your wallet, and for the environment.
