Ivor Wynne Demolition Progress

Budget Demolition has been awarded the responsibility of tearing down historic Ivor Wynne Stadium in Hamilton Ontario.  A new stadium will be built on the site and is scheduled to be ready in time for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 2014 season.  Demolition is scheduled to begin December 2012 and you can see images of the progress below.

Historical Timeline of Ivor Wynne Stadium

  • Civic Stadium was built in 1930 to host the British Empire Games, original capacity was about 2,000 seats.
  • The Hamilton Tiger-Cats became permanent tenants in 1950.
  • Capacity was increase in 1959 for the Tiger-Cats with the construction bleachers on the north side adding 15,000 seats.
  •  In 1970 it was renamed to honor Ivor Wynne, a notable contributor to the Physical Education program at McMaster University.
  • Renovations in 1970 increased capacity to 30,000 seats at a cost of $2,000,000.  Artificial turf was also added making Ivor Wynne Stadium the first in Canada to use an artificial playing field.
  • Additional renovations took place in 1976 and 1983 resulting in upgraded scoreboard and turf among other things.
  • 1996 renovations in advance of hosting another Grey Cup resulted in increased temporary seating capacity to 40,000 seats.
